Overview
Drink Buddy ("we," "us," "our") is a companion app for social drinking occasions — party features like games and prompts, paired with safety features like water reminders, ride-home planning, drink tracking, and the Sharp Check self-assessment.
This policy covers the Drink Buddy Android app and drinkbuddy.fun, including during closed testing.
What we collect
When you sign in, we collect your phone number and verify it with a one-time passcode (OTP) via Firebase Phone Auth. We also collect your display name and the settings you choose — your AI Buddy persona, safety-reminder preferences, and drink preferences. This keeps your sessions, drink tracker history, and preferences attached to your account across devices.
Messages you send to your AI Buddy (including persona modes like "Nagging Partner") are sent to OpenAI to generate a response, and are saved as part of your session history so past conversations stay available to you. See OpenAI's privacy policy for how they handle that data on their end.
We automatically collect app version, device model and OS, which features get used, session length, and crash/diagnostic data. This is what lets us fix bugs and prioritize fixes during closed testing.
Drink counts, Sharp Check results, and game responses are provided voluntarily to power the feature you're using, and are stored with your account so your tracker and history stay consistent across sessions.
Third-party services
Drink Buddy uses a small number of providers to run and improve the app. Each receives only what it needs to do its job.
| Service | Purpose | Data involved |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase (Google) | Phone sign-in (OTP), analytics & backend | Phone number, usage events, device identifiers |
| OpenAI | Powers AI Buddy chat responses | Your messages to the AI Buddy, session context |
| Crash reporting | Diagnosing crashes & errors | Crash logs, device model/OS |
| Google AdMob | In-app advertising | Advertising ID (AAID), device & interaction data |
These providers follow their own privacy policies — Google's are at policies.google.com/privacy.
How we use information
- Run the app's core features — accounts, drink tracking, ride-home planning, Sharp Check, and games.
- Maintain and improve the app, including finding and fixing bugs during closed testing.
- Understand aggregate usage so we know what to build next.
- Show and measure in-app advertising.
- Contact you about your account, testing feedback, or app changes.
- Meet legal obligations and enforce our terms.
Data retention
We keep account and usage information while your account is active, or as needed to provide the app, meet legal obligations, resolve disputes, and enforce our agreements. Delete your account and we delete or anonymize your personal information within a reasonable period, except where the law requires us to keep it.
Your choices & rights
- Access & correction — review and update your account details in the app, or by contacting us.
- Deletion — delete your account and its data any time in the app (see Deleting your account below), or by emailing us.
- Ad personalization — limit ad tracking via your device's Android advertising settings.
- Regional rights — depending on where you live, you may have rights under laws like the GDPR or CCPA/CPRA. Contact us to exercise them.
Deleting your account
You can permanently delete your account and everything tied to it directly in the app:
- Open Drink Buddy and go to the Profile tab (bottom right).
- Scroll down to the Account section.
- Tap Delete account.
- In the confirmation dialog, tap DELETE.
This immediately and permanently deletes your profile, AI Buddy sessions, and drink tracker history from our systems. It cannot be undone.
Security
We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute security — but we work to keep data protected and will notify you as required by law if a breach affects you.
Age requirement
Drink Buddy is for adults 21 and older and isn't directed at children. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and we'll delete it if we learn we have. If you believe a child has used the app, contact us.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as Drink Buddy changes — for example, moving from closed testing to public launch. Material changes update the effective date above, and where appropriate we'll notify you in the app or by email.
